Lesson 7 of 9

Your first note & fingerings

Put it together: take a full breath, form your “M” embouchure, and buzz a steady tone into the trumpet with the valves up. That open note is your C. Congratulations — you're playing!

From there, the valves walk you up the scale. On a B♭ trumpet the C major scale uses these real fingerings. Keep your air supported and adjust its speed and your embouchure to move between notes that share the same fingering:

  • C: open · D: 1 + 3 · E: 1 + 2 · F: 1
  • G: open · A: 1 + 2 · B: 2 · C: open

Open fingering can produce C, G, and the next C because your lips and air select different notes from the trumpet's harmonic series.

Head back to the interactive trumpet to hear the pitches and train with the 1, 2 and 3 keys. Its controls intentionally use one unique combination per note because a browser cannot detect changes in your lips or air.
